Finally the Words of Reason

What is fast becoming my favorite source for HD news, High-Def Digest has posted a commentary by DVDTalk.com staff reviewer Josh Zyber on the words of war between HD DVD and Blu-ray. It’s nice to hear a level-headed, objective and intelligent commentary (take that, Bill Hunt) on the reality behind all the press releases and sales figures.

On the flipside, CampaignHD.com posted a very pro-HD DVD story which unabashedly uses lots of hearsay, rumors and “anonymous sources” (always have to be weary when seeing these) to plead its case. I’d be a hypocrite to classify this as anything other than pure speculation from someone who has clearly biased interests, but the way it presents its case is an interesting read, even if it might only be pure fiction.

Personally, I thought Blu-ray was going to easily win this war. A couple months ago I wouldn’t have been surprised if HD DVD called it a day even before the crucial Holiday 2007 shopping season. I even pared back my HD DVD purchases because of my lack of faith in the format having legs. After all, I wasn’t about to rebuy all of my HD DVDs in Blu-ray. But with the Paramount/Dreamworks deal last week, the tide of momentum has clearly changed, even if it still isn’t quite an even playing field.

Even though the Blu-ray camp wants you all to believe prolonging this war isn’t good for consumers, I am one consumer quite happy with recent events. I chose HD DVD because of the low price of entry and the large library of HD DVD titles which interested me. Now I own more than 40 HD DVD titles, over half of which are exclusive to the format, which was at no small impact to my disposable income. Knowing that investment, along with future purchases, won’t become obsolete anytime soon makes me rest a little easier.
